Pick A Color- Any Color!

Published February 17, 2015 by lesleyhope

I think about lipstick a lot. What color should I buy this season? What color should I wear tomorrow? What color should I wear when I reapply in one hour? I am an avid proponent that you should always try new colors. I always have been like that. But lately, I have been reevaluating my thought process regarding lipstick. While I still am 100% pro “go for it, whatever color it may be, including the blues, greens, oranges”, I am getting into the “find a shade, tone, tint that you really like and that you really look good in, and stick by that”. I’ll explain…

Someone did a color breakdown the other day on Reddit. The two categories were “cool or warm” and “muted or bright”. Then this genius made an actual spreadsheet of at least 30 lipsticks in each shade (pink, purple, red, etc) that were the said category. It was brilliant and as I was looking at the lists, lightbulb after lightbulb kept going off in my mind. I don’t gravitate toward some colors (corals, oranges, bright warms in general) because I just don’t look good in them. Period. That’s not to say I don’t have them in my collection and I haven’t worn them and I never will wear them ever again. I will definitely rock a coral every once in awhile during the summer. But I am going to reach for my muted, cool toned mauves way more often.

So here is where we get to the good stuff! My MAC lipstick swatches! I swatched them all on my arms last night to break down the colors for myself to compare the different tones and shades against my skin.

Reds

20150128_202309

All Fired Up: matte, bright, cool toned red/berry. It is so bright and cool it comes off as pink sometimes.

Russian Red: matte, bright, cool toned true red. Fire engine with the blue based tones underneath.

Chili: Matte, muted, warm toned brick red.

Viva Glam III: matte, muted, warm toned burgundy. This could have gone into my “browns” or “mauves” section but I wanted to show to compare the difference between two very cool toned colors and two very warm. (And I still consider it a red).

Nudes

20150128_202659

Japanese Maple- warm, muted pale nude. It’s a “creamsheen” which is a type of finish that is more sheer than opaque which I don’t prefer when wearing lipsticks.

Fleshpot- warm, muted pale nude with pink undertones. Most skin-like color for a VERY nude-glam lip.

Myth- warm, light nude. One of MAC’s best sellers essentially because it looks good on all skin tones- very neutral on the spectrum.

Blankety- warm, muted pink beige. Has more pink and pigment than the other colors in this category. One of my favorites for a no makeup look.

Viva Glam II- warm, muted pinky mauve. Now we’re starting to get into more of the purplish/beige/brownish undertones which really call my name.

Kinda Sexy- warm, muted peachy nude. The peaches and orange undertones come out in this color- so it’s really not my favorite during the winter. With a tan it’s another story.

Browns/Metallics

20150128_203006

Tanarama- cool, muted beige with pearl shimmer. Probably not an everyday lipstick. I personally like to mix this with other colors to soften. For example, I will put this on top of a very dark brown to nude it down.

Viva Glam Rihanna II- cool, muted mauvey beige. One of the more unique colors of my collection.

Styled in Sepia- cool, muted taupe brown. It’s brown. It’s one of my favorite colors. It almost errors on the grey side and you do have to be careful not to look dead when you wear it but it looks AMAZING with a sharp contour.

“O”- warm, muted reddish brown with flecks of gold. This is one that could have been in the “reds”, “purples” or “browns”.

Verve- warm, muted brownish plum. Again, one of the colors that I am just into. It’s not quite vampy- but definitely a color for risk takers.

Purples (you would think I would have more but I feel that many of the swatches of my collection have mauve undertones which essentially makes them interchangeable between colors. Thus, the following are TRUE purples)

20150128_203221

Viva Glam Nicki II- cool, bright pastel lavender. VERY opaque- one of the only colors that is a true pastel.

Up The Amp- cool, muted violet. An everyday color that is one of my favorites of my collection. Has enough pink tones in it that it looks good on a variety of people.

Cyber- cool, muted blackish purple. This actually was one of my first two lipsticks ever. It’s bold, it’s beautiful and it’s vampy as hell.

Pinks

20150128_203614

Saint Germain- cool, bright pastel pink. Very similar to Viva Glam Nicki II but with brighter pink. I wore this on a date and he complimented and loved it.

Pink Plaid- cool, muted dusty pink. Very matte. It’s an everyday type of pink that you can wear with anything.

Girl About Town- cool, bright blue fuchsia. Nothing else to be said about this color. Making it my goal to wear more of these pink fuchsia shades this spring.

Pink Pigeon- cool, bright pink matte. Similar to Girl About Town but a little clearer pink and not as much blue.

Impassioned- cool, bright fuchsia with pink and coral undertones. This. Is. Bright. Not for the timid. I wear this only in the summer…. when I’ve got a glow. But blondes look awesome in these types of bright colors.

Viva Glam Nicki IV- warm, bright vibrant pink with yellow undertones. Similar to Impassioned than the swatches suggest but this is more of a true pink rather than fuchsia.

Craving- cool, muted pink berry. One of my two first lipsticks ever from MAC. It has purpley tones in it but I would categorize it overall as more of a berry pink rather than on the purple side.

OK, that’s it! I was talking with my friend Margaux earlier today and we’re going to hold each other accountable to wear different color lipsticks this spring. Trying to think of what I should start to wear more of… I’ve been going hard with the browns and vampy lips this winter. Maybe on to some pastels? We’ll see.

I hope you guys enjoyed my swatches and breakdowns of my MAC lipsticks. I had such a fun time doing it. I LOVE color and I LOVE lipstick and these are like my babies. Any questions, please holler!

Make a Stunning Entrance… Into Fall!

Published September 30, 2014 by lesleyhope

So it goes like this. I check the weather on my phone this morning: high of 73! Walk to work in my cute skirt with flip flips (brought my heels obvi). Go about my day… work, spin, sauna. Come outside in my workout clothes and flip flops: HELLO FALL! I could feel it on my skin, I could smell it in the air, hell, I even could taste it when a leaf blew into my mouth. Winter takes no prisoners, especially in the Midwest. BUT, winter gives us this beautiful thing called fall and I am going to breakdown what you need to make the easiest and classiest transition. Warning: this list does not include zip ups, Pumpkin Spice Lattes or Uggs.

1. Matte. Everything. (Almost) all of the time. I am not condoning shopping sprees but if you cannot go into your makeup bag and pull out a medium matte brown eyeshadow a medium matte any color eye shadow, I highly suggest you hop on Sephora.com, makeupgeek.com or go to your nearest Ulta. You need those mattes in your life. Especially the medium shades for everyday. We’re done with the corally shimmers and golds for a little bit right now. Put them away for like a week. Then you can get them back out. My favorites? The Naked Basics Palette sold online and in stores a Ulta and Sephora. It’s great for beginners. If you’re a tad more advanced or already have it, try the Lorac Pro Palette from Ulta. Awesome range and what a great bang for your buck.

2. More Matte. Everything. But now I’m talking about lips. And let me be more specific, matte browns and nudes. YEP I said it. This woman of color has said it and there is no going back. This summer was all about the color but this winter is about them warm toned shades. I can’t get over these colors because they were the colors I wore when I first EVER started wearing makeup. The mocha shades, the berry colors, the muted roses. I went to Ulta yesterday and NYX is PACKED with these type of colors- they are $3.50 too! My favorite shades and MUST HAVES for anyone are Whipped Caviar, Maison, Butter, Euro Trash. MAC has some awesome colors as well: Pink Plaid, Kinda Sexy and Velvet Teddy are a few.

3. Last but not least- I have talked about matte this and medium this. I am leaving you with ONE last item that you will need this fall. A true bold ass lip color. And maybe a little haircut or style. But definitely a bold, daring, dark or vampy lip color. And not for everyday- hold those horses. For the night you go out for dirty martinis with your girlfriends, or the day you pull on your sweater and sunglasses and go window shopping downtown, or the night you go on a third date to the pumpkin patch or haunted house (I swear I’m not naming these from experience). Really though! Get on that dark purple, those dark jeweled tones and get a little lose. But wear your pearls. Check out this new collection from NYX that I’m about to obsess over. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Those are pretty crazy but there are tons of other deep, rich colors that will do the trick just fine. Suggestions: MAC Cyber, OCC Anita, OCC Vintage, Loreal Lip Crayon in Petite Plum. Do it.

I am dedicating the next month and a half to….. The MISS SJ 2014-15 Pageant! I have been asked to do the make up for it and I could not be more excited!

I also have a bomb project I have been working on for Halloween… the 7 Deadly Skins. Can’t wait to show you guys!

Lots of love,

Color Me Summer

Published May 5, 2014 by lesleyhope

Hello beautiful people!

I am deeply sorry for my lack of blogging. I’ve been mulling over a lot of things having to do with this blog, my passions & my future lately. I have made some decisions so stay tuned!

Anyway, let’s talk makeup. I heard about NYX Macaron Lippies about a month ago. I started watching Ssssamantha’s youtube channel (also BATALASHBEAUTY) and I was instantly drawn. #wcw everyday. She’s awesome. She posted a review on them before they were released and I was intrigued- black, blue, green lipsticks?! Come to mama!

I feel like I waited WEEKS for them to arrive. I was first spelling them wrong on the internet so I didn’t even know they were released on NYX’s website. When I finally found the link, I was elated. I ordered 5 colors (I was only going to get 4 but after $25 you get free shipping and they’re $6 each soooo… yeah, had to). They were shipped from Los Angeles so it took about a week for them to arrive. Why am I telling you all of this? Well, because receiving these lipsticks was the biggest thorn in my ass. Fed Ex first doesn’t have a universal key to my building to drop the box off where allllll the other UPS and USPS mailmen drop boxes. Okay, that’s fine. One extra day. I’ll wait until the next day. I leave a note on the intercom system- “FED EX FOR G*****S, CALL 948”. I have my phone by me that next day. I am staring at it all morning. All of the sudden, “New Voicemail”. WHAT?! NOOOO!!! My phone apparently doesn’t have service in my work building! Awesome! So I call Fed Ex customer service and find out what the heck to do. Get it reconsigned to a Fed Ex Kinkos and pick it up the next day. Ugh, double ugh. So finally it’s the next day, it’s pouring but it’s cool. I’ll do what I gotta do to get these damn lipsticks. And I did. I conquered Fed Ex and ventured on public transit to the opposite side of town to pick up my box in the rain. Whew! Got ’em guys! I couldn’t wait to get home and open this puppy up…. they didn’t disappoint.

Left to right…

  • Pistachio- mint green
  • Earl grey- muted periwinkle
  • Violet- can we say ULTRA violet?!
  • Black Seasame- light grey
  • Blue velvet- bright blue

These are only 5 out of I believe 12. They also have white, black, lime green, orange, yellow, pink & lavender. I wanted to get colors that I would not buy anywhere else. The violet was the one that I put into my shopping bag at the end on a whim because I knew I would receive free shipping. I think I would love the black & orange. Now, I want to be clear. I would probably not wear this out alone. I think people absolutely could but I use them more for blending purposes. Do you see where I’m going with this? I mixed Pistachio with a MAC lipstick last night- a dark burgundy I can’t remember the name. The color that these two created was gorgeous! It was a browny mauve since red and green are complimentary colors & cancel each other out.

Back to the lippies, they are creamy, pigmented and last a decent amount of time. In my swatches I actually only lined my lips when I put on Violet. I think you can tell. All the rest of the swatches look like they bleed a little bit but they don’t- it’s all about the lip liner ladies!!!

I would absolutely recommend these. I mean, they’re $6, good quality (some of NYX’s other lipsticks smell a LITTLE funny) and it’s SUMMER! Go crazy! Have fun! With a tan, an orange or the blue would be beautiful looking! Check out Musings of a Muse- beautiful swatches.

I will post more, promise.

Farewell for now pretty people!

Must Have Lipstick Shades

Published March 10, 2014 by lesleyhope

Sometimes my life experiences are the ways I come up with topics. I talk as if I am a reputable author that writes so much… Anyway, I went to Chelsea Handler’s stand up show tonight (it was hysterical) and I was going through pictures afterwards (because every girl documents these type of events like woah). I’m reflecting on the L afterwards, going through all the pictures, experimenting with all the filters to see if I can make myself look tan (I can’t).  So I’m really studying and critiquing the hell out of these pictures. I had put on a bright pink lipstick color for the show- and when I mean bright, I’m talking like Malibu Barbie bright. The hottest, pinkest pink there is. I loved it, but when I was staring at nothing but these pictures I thought to myself, thank god I tried this color going to Chelsea Handler and not work or a date. Don’t get me wrong, I am all about experimenting and trying everything you’re up for but some colors scream certain things. Like this pink, it screamed NOT FOR WORK, JUST WEAR TO A SPECIAL EVENT THAT ONLY FASHION FORWARD PEOPLE WILL BE AT. And that red screams a couple of different things- ALPHA FEMALE, DON’T F*** WITH ME, or SEX. That dark purple that is almost black screams I WILL DOMINATE YOU or GET OUT OF MY WAY. You get my point?

Now I wanted to put together a list of lipstick colors that are must have universally. Universal for all skin tones, all ages (this blog is 18 and over BTW so I’m not endorsing anything under that), all hair colors, eye colors, etc.

First up… blue.

Just kidding.

1) Red. Not rocket science. Just red.

20140309_222908

Why? Because it’s classic. Because makes you stand out. Because it looks good on anyone. Because… that color is smoking hot!  I highly suggest it for sales jobs where the guys are a little sleazy and the ladies have to be a little forward. Not trying to sound anti-feminist but play the part when you need to. And if you happen to have bright red lips and get the job, sale or man- amen sister.

2) Natural nude.

20140309_222908_2

I love color but I am a LOVER of the nudes. The natural, barely there look is so sexy and can be worn literally anytime with any makeup on your eyes and face.

3) Soft, light pink.

20140309_222908_3

Not a barbie pink. Just a very feminine color. I hate saying this but it’s romantic! Baby pink works well on everyone and it doesn’t scream anything. It actually whispers, “kiss me, I’m a girl”.

4) Deep berry

20140309_222908_4

This color has come onto the fashion map full force in the past year especially and it’s not going anywhere. I stand by my word that anyone can pull off a bold, berry shade on their lips. I don’t care if you’re white, black, medium, blue or yellow- you can and should have this color in your makeup kit.

That concludes the four colors I believe are must have lipsticks. It doesn’t mean you need to go out right now and buy them all (even though if you’re going to Walgreens or the mall anytime soon…) but you should be open to every single one of these colors and I never want to hear “that color doesn’t look good on me”.

Sleep tight and work out hard tomorrow ladies! Summer is upon us. It’s 40 degrees in Chicago!

Speaking of summer…

20140309_225243

This is OPI’s Feelin’ Hot Hot Hot! It’s the best hot pink nail polish. Looks better with a tan but something has to get me through the next week when there’s still snow on the ground.

Adios and sleep tight,

Lesley Hope xo.
